Graduate of the Business Management study programme at the HIM

I had decided to study at the HIM when I was already working. After my training in hotel management and working as an assistant in the human resources department of a 5* hotel it had become clear to me that there had to be something more to come. If it was to be studying, it was important to me that it was as practice-orientated and as diversified as possible. I wanted to look beyond the horizon of human resources, since being an assistant means dealing with a great variety of different subjects and the difficulty is having to understand a bit of everything.

And it is this very diversity that I acquired from the study programme „International Business Management“ at the HIM. As the assistant to the „Vice President Human Resources“ in a technology firm I need this wide range of knowledge every day.

That my studies were to a great extent in English is also a great help to me today. In a French Group operating on an international scale the Group language is of course English. I notice quite clearly that having had to write the many English assignments helps me today to find the right tone – even between the lines – in dealing with English correspondence.

One very important aspect in making the decision to go to the HIM was that I couldn’t imagine studying at a „normal“ university at that time. I wanted smaller study groups and direct contact to the tutors. These I definitely found at the HIM.

Apart from the expertise I, of course, acquired during the three years in Heidelberg, the HIM also offered in a variety of soft skills seminars the opportunity of getting to know and above all assess yourself better. While you are studying you sometimes perhaps don’t know when this is going to be useful – but as soon as you are working you realize: it is important to know what you can do well, where your own weaknesses lie, etc. A sound knowledge of business management alone is not enough in this day and age.

Today I am very glad that I made the decision to study 3 ½ years ago. I would never have got my present job without my Bachelor study programme at the HIM.
