Graduate of the Marketing & Corporate Communications study programme at the HIM
With my degree from the HIM I got straight onto a trainee programme with GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. GCB is Germany’s central contact for congresses, conferences, incentives and events, and I’m involved in the sales and marketing side.
Joining GCB as a trainee was a good opportunity to get to know more about the events industry as a whole. Besides dealing with customers, I am also in contact with our members (hotel chains, event locations, event agencies and convention centres). The traineeship entailed a wide range of assignments in social media marketing, customer relations, press liaison, etc.
My studies in Heidelberg quickly equipped me for entry into the events industry. I benefited first and foremost from the language skills imparted to us over the three years. Of course the project-related work was also a great help, as many work flows were similar to or transferable to working life. I am able to draw on my basic skills and knowledge when corresponding with customers from abroad or working at various foreign trade fairs such as International Confex 2011 in London.
The GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. also regularly hosts placements, but only for a minimum of 6 months to guarantee that trainees experience the preparation and implementation of the IMEX fair (Incorporating meetings made in Germany - the worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings and events). In this respect, perhaps the HIM will be able to negotiate opportunities to do 6-month placements.
